After a spanning career as the beloved, sarcastic host of the Late Show, last night, David Letterman celebrated his final show. In the recent weeks leading up to his sign off, he’s revisited all of his favorite interviewees and has gifted us with some highlights of his tenure. In the compilation video below, Letterman has a few hilarious exchanges with some very quick-witted children.
My favorite part of this compilation is when Letterman completely breaks face and starts cracking up in spite of himself. There’s a bit where he’s laughing so hard about pickles that he can hardly speak. In the next sequence, he spins a tale about Santa visiting prison that makes little sense to his confused pupil.
“Years and years ago when I was in prison,” he begins, “Santa came to see us. Of course in prison, they have no chimneys because the cons would be going over the wall left and right.” After expounding on his fabricated gift of cigarettes from Santa in the prison of his mind, he asks the little girl, “That’s a nice story, isn’t it?”
“It’s a weird story,” she giggles. Perfect answer.
What stands to be learned from this hilarious video is that David Letterman is pretty well equipped to getting kids to say hilarious things. We’ll miss him!
