Old Man And His Pet Tortoise Are Celebrities In Their Community

They say patience is a virtue, but in the case of one man in Tokyo, it's more like a way of life.

We've seen people with some pretty strange pet choices here at LittleThings. From this family in Brazil who keep seven fully grown tigers in their home like they're a litter of kittens, to the people out there who treat animals like raccoons and possums just like family, we've just about seen it all.

When it comes to unusual pets, I believe that as long as the animal is being treated humanely and living a better life than it would in the wild, the owner is good in my book. And as we've seen so many times over and over, many times the pet and owner form a bond more special than that with any other human.

The perfect example of this is Mitani Hisao and his unconventional pet in the next video. Hisao is a 62-year-old funeral director who has no human family, but for the past 19 years, he's been a father to a giant tortoise who looks like he came straight out of a book about ancient dinosaurs. Named Bon-Chan, the tortoise grew from being a tiny, five-centimeter baby to a whopping 2'5 and 165 pounds over their time together.

Hisao and Bon-Chan have become local celebrities in their neighborhood, attracting young children and fans, as they take daily walks that would take the average person a few minutes, but takes the massive tortoise over an hour.

Bon-Chan would have likely had an ill fate if anyone else had adopted him or if he was released into the while. Since some tortoises can live up to 200 years, I think it's safe to say these two are going to have a very happy, long life together.
