The tradition of a newly commissioned officer's "first salute" is an incredibly special moment in that Marine's life and career. They only get to give their first salute away to one special person but luckily, the Marine in this video gave it to someone who plays an especially meaningful person in her life.
After so much pain and learning in boot camp, after so many push ups and screaming drill instructors, after all that sweat, hunger, and cold, and more push-ups: The moment is finally here to start the next leg of their journey.
That moment when a civilian has officially been granted their first commission shows that he/she is no longer a civilian but, instead, is now a tried and true Marine. The first salute received is a symbolic final showing that that Marine is now officially a Marine down to the bone.
In the video below, retired Staff Sargent James Williams offers the first salute to none other than his Granddaughter, 2nd Lieutenant Charlotte Williams. And while she doesn't seem to have a silver dollar to give to him, that might be because of the question that he asks her. When she responds to his "request," I dare you not to tear up.
