Oh, pregnancy. It brings so much excitement and joy and … a few really un-fun symptoms. Some pregnancy symptoms we hear about all the time, like morning sickness, headaches, and swollen akles. Others are far less talked about. But a very pregnant Hilary Duff just brought up one that we almost never hear about. That pregnancy symptom? Oh yeah. It's called "lightning crotch."
Hilary recently appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show with guest host Brooke Baldwin, and she talked about the strange and wildly terrifying pregnancy symptom.
Hilary and Brooke chatted first about babies and pregnancy and Hilary's cute new blue hair. All the fun things! Then they got into the real gritty pregnancy details.
Hilary looked so super adorable when she appeared on the screen. Her blue hair is totally cute, and she's pretty much on the verge of giving birth. Her adorable hella pregnant and very cute vibe was on full display.
Brooke had to inquire about the hair, though, wondering if Hilary was trying to send a secret message about the gender of the baby. But Hilary shot that down saying she and her husband don't even know the gender of the baby. They found out the sex of their first two babies while in utero. For their third, they wanted to be surprised.
Brooke asked Hilary how she was feeling, given that she's almost to her due date. Hilary revealed that even though her third pregnancy has definitely been the easiest one, she's feeling it at this point. She said she is very tired and has certainly reached the slowing-down point of pregnancy as she approaches her due date.
Then Brooke asked Hilary about her weird pregnancy symptom, which she had seen Hilary and her husband chatting about on social media. "You have shared that you have been experiencing … this is so not my day job … you have been experiencing lightning crotch," Brooke said through muffled laughter.
Hilary laughed before responding that yes, she is having this weird symptom. "I didn't have it with my other kids," she said. "So, I texted my midwife the other day and I was like 'what is up with these stabbing pains in my vagina? I'm not feeling this.'"
Host Brooke got a little squirmy in her seat at that point and started asking where her champagne was because … ouch ouch.
"It feels awful," she continued. "Like you're being struck by lightning." And wouldn't you know it, according to Hilary's midwife, that's the name the strange condition is known by, at least in the midwifery world. "She just wrote back and she was like 'oh, lightning crotch' like it was no big deal. And I was like this is quite traumatic."
Hilary went on to explain why the condition happens and that it's really a sensation that occurs when the baby is lowering and getting ready for delivery. So while it's not super uncommon for pregnant people to get "lightning crotch," it's likely just something people don't talk about too much. The internet, of course, chimed in. Some people shared that they had experienced this, as well. Others just said they loved the honest conversation about what happens to bodies while making tiny humans.
Lightning crotch, like so many pregnancy ailments, can be super uncomfortable. Luckily, it usually only happens late in pregnancy. Hilary has just a couple of weeks to go, so hopefully she will be feeling better soon!
Hilary's growing family is way too cute. We can't wait to see her new addition. We also really love hearing about Hilary's experiences with all things motherhood. So here's to a healthy arrival for her little one and more revealing conversations from Hilary on #momlife.
