Kate Winslet Reveals Her Daughter Started Acting Without Anyone Knowing They’re Related

Acting is a fun and exciting career full of rewarding and unique experiences. It's no wonder it appeals to a lot of people, especially the children of some of Hollywood's biggest names.

Of course, some Hollywood kiddos lean on those big names more than others. In an industry that's all about who you know, it doesn't hurt to be birthed by an industry expert or two. But some children of famous actors seek to earn roles based on their skills rather than their famous parent's name. The latter may be true of Mia Threapleton.

Mia is the daughter of actress Kate Winslet and film director Jim Threapleton. The 20-year-old has quietly begun an acting career of her own without anyone connecting the dots between her and her famous parents.

Kate Winslet's daughter has decided to follow in mom's footsteps. Kate recently revealed that 20-year-old Mia Threapleton has pursued an acting career without anyone knowing she's the actress's daughter. Mia is the only child of Kate and her ex-husband, director Jim Threapleton.

"[She's] 20 and acting," Kate revealed to TV interviewer Lorraine Kelly on her show Lorraine.

Mia had a role in her mother's 2014 film A Little Chaos. Her next role was a starring one in the 2020 thriller Shadows.

"What's great for her is she has a different surname so she slipped under the radar and the people who cast her didn't know she was my daughter and that was important for her self-esteem, of course," Kate explained.

Kate is also a mom to two boys, 17-year-old Joe with Sam Mendes, and 7-year-old Bear with husband Edward Abel Smith.

Mia has opened up about her own career. Last year, she revealed her role in Shadows was the first role she ever auditioned for.

"Shadows was the first film I'd received an audition for, and the first script I had ever been given to read. I couldn’t believe my luck," she told Variety.

"I read it and didn’t put it down. Which is admitting a lot because I'm dyslexic and that means I have to read slowly and steadily to be able to absorb things fully sometimes."

Unlike the children of other actors, Mia didn't spend time on film sets growing up. There were a few occasions where she'd visit, but it was a rarity.

"I never actually spent much time around sets that my mum was working on. It was always a special treat," she explained.

"It's a very different experience when it is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time. I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right! And I loved every second of it."

"She's away just now in the Czech Republic about to start work on a TV series over there," Kate updated of Mia's latest moves.

"That's been a wonderful thing. I think I knew it was coming, I always suspected. And then a few years ago she turned around and said, 'I think I would like to give it a go.'"
