Many of us might feel stuck in a career. Even if it's something we've done for some time, there's always that nagging question of, "Would I be happier somewhere else?" Tylan Bailey likely knows the feeling very well.
Tylan was a school custodian for years. But working in the school made him realize that what he really wanted was to be a physical education teacher. So, despite being in his 40s, he went to college and followed his dream.
The story is incredibly inspirational, since many people figure that by a certain age, it's too late. But life changes can come at any moment. To bring that point home further, actors Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt wanted to make sure Tylan knew how wonderful he was for believing in himself. So, they went on Good Morning America to surprise him.
T.J. Holmes initially surprised Tylan by taking him from his home, blindfolding him, and taking him to the Good Morning America studio. There, when he arrived, were his family and friends cheering him on. He seemed completely surprised.
T.J. also told a stunned Tylan that he was live on television. But, that wasn't the only surprise. Emily and The Rock, who star in the film Jungle Cruise, were there to say hello and offer him a trip to California to see the big premiere. He'll also get Disneyland park passes for him and his family.
Tylan, referred to as "Mr. Bailey" by his colleagues, was also treated to a video montage of his coworkers saying kind words about his dedication and hard work. He seems to be an ultimate team player at school, and his determination to change his career was noted by all.
"What a journey and how inspiring your story is," The Rock said to him on air. "We're proud of you." Emily also had some words of encouragement. "You just keep shining your light," she said. "You're amazing."
Tylan is a father of four. For 23 years, he worked as the head custodian of Hightower Elementary School in DeKalb County, Georgia. He was 39 when he realized that his passion was in teaching, so he enrolled in Georgia State University while still working his job.
Balancing all of those responsibilities was a lot to handle, but Tylan ended up graduating in four years. Part of the reason for his success was all the love and support he had behind him. "I feel blessed to have a community, a family of people who really supported me throughout this journey," Tylan said. "It's been tough."
He's a crowd favorite with his colleagues as well. "Through his journey of becoming a teacher, everyone has really admired how hardworking he is and determined he is," said Hightower Elementary teacher Rebecca Sokol, who also mentioned that Tylan is a role model to the young kids. "We're all so inspired by him."
Tylan's wife, Areka Bailey, may be the most proud of all. She mentioned how Tylan's achievements have inspired his entire family. "He's told me stories about cousins calling him saying, 'I heard about your story, man, I'm proud of you. You're my motivation,'" she said. "'Now I know that I can do it too. Nothing is holding me back.'"
Tylan didn't do this for the chance to appear on television someday. He likely had no idea that he'd run into The Rock and Emily and have them recognize him. But, he did it because being in a school made him realize he had a passion for education. He liked being part of the team, and was a huge part of the school even as a janitor.
He had a lot on his plate — as a janitor, a father, and a student. But he made it work and didn't let his packed schedule stop him for pursuing his degree. Now, as he mentioned on Twitter, he has a B.S.E in Health and Physical Education and a minor in Special Education. And, he graduated with honors.
Hopefully, being able to hang out in California with his family to catch Jungle Cruise will be a nice break for Tylan. After all that work, he deserves a nice vacation before school starts up. Without a doubt, his Good Morning America surprise — and the ability to share his story with the world — will forever have a positive impact on him and many others.
