If you are a person who happens to have a vagina that bleeds for a few days every month, well, first off, go you. Bloody vaginas are the thing, you know. Secondly, you need to know about the Nixit cup.
By now, period cups are nothing new. While a couple of years ago, getting up close and personal with your period by using a cup — rather than ripping out your tampon and flushing it with as little contact as possible — was totally weird, now we accept it as pretty standard. The tough part about cups is finding the right one for your unique body and period.
Personally, the Nixit cup hits the mark for me. Or rather, stays on the mark in order to catch the flow. You got me? Thought so.
Unless you are generally very brave about what goes in your vagina (that sounds wrong), then you're probably nervous about using Nixit. And I feel you! It looks super weird! The shape of it made absolutely no sense to my brain. I mean, I've had two babies come out of me, and I was really worried about how that little disc was gonna situate itself up in there.
Thankfully, I got it in there with minimal issues. But on the first go-round, I needed some serious troubleshooting. When I took the cup out to check if the blood was going where it needed to, it absolutely was not. It was sort of collecting underneath the cup, rather than going in it.
Ah, well. Perks of working from home. Know what I mean?
I realized I wasn't getting the cup in far enough. That's probably because I was used to using a DivaCup, which sits differently inside the vaginal canal. Nixit needs a little more of a shove.
Fear not! I promise it won't get lost in there. If it does, well, there are doctors for that. JK. Anyway, for me personally (and many, many people who give Nixit a 5-star review online), once it's in the proper place, it stays put. It also does a pretty awesome job of catching blood. But most importantly, you literally cannot feel it.
Not being able to feel the cup at all is, by far, the biggest draw for me. I was used to other cups that ended up making me feel sore, or pressing against my cervix in a way that was actually painful. Nixit doesn't do any of these things. Therefore, add me to the list of 5-star reviewers.
All cups are helpful to the environment. But as a company, Nixit really seems to be leading the way in terms of sustainability, and their products are all eco-friendly. Plus, you don't need to spend money every month on tampons. I mean, when you think about it, using Nixit for a year means saving literally hundreds on other period products.
The cup can also stay in place for up to 12 hours. I'm not sure I'd go that long on the first day of my period, but as for the rest of the time, no doubt about it. Since I really can't feel the cup, after my period symptoms are gone in a day or so, I end up forgetting I'm bleeding at all.
Not only is Nixit a super-awesome period product, it's a super-awesome company with a very period-positive vibe. Following its social media is like having a personal cheerleader for being on your period. After centuries of periods being regarded as gross or shameful, I'm all about the positive period energy.
Nixit cups cost $39 at Nordstrom, which is basically a steal considering how much money you will save, and they come in pretty colors. While you might never love your period, chances are you're gonna love your Nixit. Order one up. You can thank me later.
