Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff’s Tattoos Each Have A Very Special Meaning

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff may not seem like a tattoo guy, but he is!

Eagle-eyed fans of the second couple have noticed that Emhoff does indeed have three visible tattoos that were totally out on display while he supported wife Kamala Harris on the campaign trail ahead of the 2020 election.

We know that Emhoff is a major family man, so it's no surprise that all three of his tattoos have special meanings related to the different members of his family.

Doug Emhoff's first two tattoos are the initials of his children, 27-year-old Cole and 22-year-old Ella. His third tattoo is a symbol of the dragon, which is the Chinese zodiac symbol of the year that he and Kamala were both born, 1964.

Kamala isn't known to have any tattoos, but Doug isn't the only inked member of the family. Ella loves to get tattooed and had around 18 tattoos as of her New York Times profile in early 2021.

Of course, tattoos are pretty rare in politics. There has never been a president, vice president, or member of the first or second families known to be inked while in office. That said, there are rumors that we have had a tattooed president.

It's believed that Theodore Roosevelt was discovered to have a family crest tattoo on his chest at the time of his death. It hasn't been officially confirmed but is widely agreed upon.

Emhoff is in a unique position, having left his career as an entertainment attorney behind to follow Kamala Harris' dreams. He's currently teaching at Georgetown University Law Center as well as shaping the legacy of the second gentleman.

"I am honored to be the first male spouse of an American president or vice president," Emhoff wrote on Twitter in January.

"But I'll always remember generations of women have served in this role before me—often without much accolade or acknowledgment. It's their legacy of progress I will build on as Second Gentleman."
