Neve Campbell is opening up about her son's adoption.
Neve has two children: Raynor, 3, and Caspian, 9. Her youngest son came to her family through adoption, but unlike a lot of people who adopt, Neve said that Raynor has known he was adopted from the very beginning.
On The Kelly Clarkson Show, host Kelly asked Neve about her approach. She responded that it was very important to both her and her husband that her son always know exactly where he came from.
"I read a lot about it. I think back in the day we used to think 'Keep it from them and throw it at them when they're 21 so their entire reality falls apart,' which makes so much sense," she joked. But Neve didn't want to hit her grown child with that after years of a false reality.
"Really the guidance that I had was even before they understand the language, talk about their birth mother, talk about their story," she explained. "Tell them who they are."
Neve said she did some things to prepare for those conversations, too. She said that before her son was even born, she asked his birth mother for photos or a letter sharing details about herself. She didn't want her son to be in the dark about who his birth mother was.
Neve said that Raynor's birth mother, a woman named Cynthia, liked the idea. "She actually made an entire album for him of photos of herself and things about her life and things that she likes," she shared.
The Scream actress says she believes that knowing details about his birth mother is really important and that it helps him feel connected to her. "He feels this relationship to her and I think it's really important, 'cause they're gonna need that," she said. Truly, Neve nurturing that interest in where he came from feels like a pretty beautiful approach to adoption.
It's also beautiful how open Neve has always been about Raynor's adoption. Shortly after he joined their family, she revealed the news on Instagram, writing, "Sheer joy!!!!….So it's been a secret up until now as JJ and I wanted to wait until it was official but we adopted a beautiful baby boy 5 months ago."
She post continued, "His name is Raynor and we are madly in love with him. Our 6 year old son Caspian is over the moon and asks every morning "Can I hold my baby? Can I feed my baby? Can I play with my baby."
Neve sharing so much about her journey is undoubtedly helpful to those setting out on the same path. Adoption can be filled with tons of questions and confusion. But the mom of two not only being open about how her family came to be but also sharing her perspective on how to make adoption easier on kids is nothing short of amazing.
