Wisconsin Couple Fights Off Bear Inside Home While Their Children Are Sleeping

A Wisconsin couple did something completely unimaginable to save their lives and the lives of their children — they fought off a black bear.

On May 20 at around 11 p.m., the bear smashed through a window and was able to climb into their home. The husband and wife had seen the bear outside, eating from a bird feeder. That led them to open the window and yell for the bear to go away.

Instead, the beast charged toward them and broke in.

According to a press release, police said the bear "immediately turned and charged at the house, breaking through the window and into the house and immediately attacked."

Both the husband and wife sustained injuries as the bear attacked, but they kept fighting back.

Police said they grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the bear. The husband then ran to get a firearm and shot the animal. It died in their home.

Luckily, the couple's children managed to sleep through the ordeal. They were unharmed. Both the husband and wife survived the attack, though they each had several bites. They were taken to a local hospital and have since been released.

Authorities said that a cub was also seen near the home. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said that black bears usually avoid humans but a bear can become "defensive when protecting its young or a food source."

The bear was taken by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for testing.

The couple did the correct thing in fighting back. With certain bears, it's best to avoid eye contact and remain still, but if you encounter a black bear, yelling to frighten the bear off is best. If a black bear attacks, you should always fight back.
