King Charles III Reportedly Breaking Coronation Tradition To Wear His Military Uniform

A historic moment is set to take place on May 6, 2023. The coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, will be held at Westminster Abbey. Charles officially became king immediately after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. The coronation is a symbolic religious ceremony that simply solidifies the passage of power and is not necessary for the actual transfer of power.

Perhaps because of this, Charles has announced he will make many changes to the coronation ceremony. One of these is a change in attire. According to The Sun, Charles will opt for a military uniform instead of the traditional look of silk stockings and breeches.

Charles is making this change on the advice of those closest to him. “Senior aides think breeches look too dated,” a source close to the palace said. Charles wants his coronation to reflect a “modern 21st century monarchy.”

“Though some of the more long-winded elements of the Coronation will be moved aside or modernized, the King was happy to wear the breeches and stockings. But in discussion with senior aides they are saying he should not wear them, so will arrive in a military uniform instead,” the source added.

King Charles’ coronation will still be a spectacular event, even if it is modernized. Sources say it will “knock your socks off.”

“It is largely to do with modernizing the Coronation and stripping away the stuffiness. They think having a 74-year-old King arriving in stockings and breeches in 2023 looks too dated. They are probably right,” the source concluded.
