When Brittani Tomic was pregnant, doctors found a cyst on her unborn daughter's brain, along with a white spot on her heart.
Incredibly, baby Zola was born healthy. But around six months later, Brittani noticed that her baby just wasn't progressing.
For Zola, the smallest ear infections would turn to pneumonia. Then came the unexpected fevers. Then came the seizures.
Finally, an ear, nose, and throat specialist recommended Zola get her tonsils removed to treat her sleep apnea, which was causing her seizures. It was a routine procedure, and everyone thought it went smoothly.
Shortly after getting her tonsils removed, however, Zola woke up and ran into her parent's room. She was covered in blood and collapsed on the floor.
Zola was almost out of blood and falling in and out of consciousness. They rushed her to the hospital.
The doctor came out and told Brittani that her daughter was going to be OK. She had suffered a hemorrhage that was caused by a rare disorder that affects the collagen and tissue. "For most people it's like they're put together with superglue, their bones and tissue … hers is like bubblegum," Brittani told WJW Cleveland.
