Chrissy Teigen Opens Up About Having Plastic Surgery At 20 And Regretting It Later

Chrissy Teigen has talked about everything before. She's not afraid to bring up politics — or parenting mishaps. She's also not afraid to put herself out there. So it's a little strange that she waited so long to talk about plastic surgery.

As the cover girl for the British edition of Glamour, she finally opened up about a procedure she had done in her early 20s — and regrets. Before she was a television personality and a Twitter all-star, she was best known for her modeling career. While she's still been known to strike a pose, it's something that she's not as actively pursuing anymore.

"I did my boobs when I was about 20 years old," Chrissy Teigen admits. "It was more for a swimsuit thing. I thought, if I’m going to be posing, laid on my back, I want them to be perky! But then you have babies and they fill up with milk and deflate and now I am screwed."

Chrissy isn't alone. The procedure is fairly common for models and women who want to be models. "Not only can larger breasts prevent models from fitting into 'sample sizes,' they lend themselves to different types of modeling like glamour or lingerie modeling, which is perfectly fine," ModelScouts writes. "If you’re set on a particular kind of modeling, make sure you discuss how breast implants could limit your options in your desired market before you go ahead with them."

That said, Chrissy admits that the procedure wasn't drastic. "Honestly, I kept them the same cup size," she said. "I just filled them out, so they are rounder and firmer. I had a quarter ‘teardrop’ cup in the bottom and filled out the breast line."

Even though it wasn't a big surgery, it's something she wishes she could take back. Even if you don't have children, your body often changes when you get older. "I want them out now," she admits. "If I could do one thing, it would be to have a lift."

That said, she feels as if any sort of surgery today would be too risky. Especially since she has three kids who depend on her. "I think you’re supposed to replace [implants] every ten years," she said. "But when you have kids you think about [the risks] of surgery and I think, 'This is not the way I want to die, in boob surgery.'"

She also wants to make it clear that everyone in the spotlight does something to alter their appearance. "You can’t set these expectations for people that everything is perfect," she said. "Everyone filters their [expletive], edits or Facetunes so you forget what normal faces or bodies look like. It’s not fair and it makes you jealous of other people’s bodies. It’s lying to people by omission."

As a mom, she also thinks it's important to talk to children about the unhealthy beauty standards out there. "While you want to teach your kids to be comfortable in their own skin, you want to tell them everything you can and let them decide," she said.

Chrissy has three children with her husband, musician John Legend. Luna Simone Stephens is her firstborn, and Miles Theodore is her second. Esti Maxine is the newest. They were conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), which Chrissy has been open and honest about. She's one of the few celebrities to open up about fertility issues.

"The big question was why this wasn’t working for us when I was young and he was healthy," Chrissy said, per Today. "I thought, people get pregnant by accident all the time! How does this happen? Once we talked about IVF, it was like I heard everything."

She also made sure to let people know that IVF wasn't easy. It was an emotional journey, filled with a lot of fear and doubt. "Emotionally, it could be really hard," she said. "When you have these high-highs and low-lows, and you’re, like, cuckoo pants. You don't want to get your hopes up, but of course, you do."

Children impacted Chrissy's body in many different ways. Prior to the birth of Luna, she was really strict about constantly weighing herself. It's something that many women do, and it's often a harmful behavior. Every meal you eat is scrutinized.

"I used to weigh myself every morning, afternoon and night. I knew what the scales would say after each meal," she admitted to Glamour. "I did that for eight years and had this one weight I wanted to be at. That changed with Luna, and really changed with Miles where it took me a year to be comfortable with my new normal number."

But she admitted that it's nice to feel more free when it comes to her body. "I do look at [my body] in the shower and think, ‘Arghhh, these kids’. But I don’t take the aesthetics so seriously now. It’s very fulfilling not having that pressure of putting on a swimsuit and looking good for a magazine while running around a beach, which I did when I was modeling," she said.

It's wonderful to hear that even Chrissy is embracing the change. Pregnancy and motherhood can be rough on a woman's body, and so many people are quick to focus on females "bouncing back" after the experience. Chrissy will always look fantastic, but it seems like she's accepted herself, which can be tough when you're in the spotlight.

It's good to hear Chrissy open up about how ridiculous beauty standards can be. While she may regret her surgery, it's refreshing to hear that she's putting herself — and her life — before making other alterations. It's one more reason why America has embraced Chrissy. She's funny, honest, and one of the best celebrity moms around.
