Kathy Griffin Reveals She Has Been Diagnosed With Complex PTSD: ‘God Help Me’

There is still so much stigma surrounding mental health that it is nice when a celebrity talks openly about it. It helps normalize the conversations we should all be having. Kathy Griffin took to TikTok to do just that.

She recently opened up about her post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis. She also shared the many ways she manages it and asked for advice. People were so thankful for her vulnerability in the comment section.

On April 16, 2023, Kathy confirmed in a TikTok that she had been diagnosed with “an extreme case” of complex PTSD. This was the first time she publicly announced her diagnosis. She asked for advice on how to handle it.

“If any of you know my story, you’ll understand that this really started for me about five and a half years ago, wink, you know, the cancer didn’t help,” she said. She kept a sunny, upbeat demeanor throughout.

Kathy has a history of being open with her fans on social media about her health. In 2021, Kathy had major lung surgery as part of fight against cancer. Kathy also revealed on Instagram she had attempted suicide in 2020.

“The last time I was in a hospital was in June 2020 when I tried to take my life and overdose on prescription pills,” Kathy said about her suicide attempt. “With over a year clean and drug free, I now know I can do this and anything I want without those devil pills.”

Kathy opened up about how her anxiety and PTSD manifest. She posted one video on April 14 in which she said she had an "eight-hour attack" the previous day. It was not pleasant.

She went on to talk about the current day and how she was going to spend it. "Today I felt like one might be coming on, I started to feel like a little iffy, so I'm on my walk now, and I'm outside and looking at the ocean, which is helpful," she shared.

One way she copes is by telling herself this is not permanent. It also helps to keep moving. "I'm sort of, almost mid an anxiety attack right now, but it feels good to be walking my way through it, and I just keep telling myself it won't last forever,” she said.

On April 16, she shared that putting on makeup and getting dressed help her cope. "So, we're going to a farmers market today and, you know, I like to sort of be overdressed sometimes for stuff because getting ready gives me something to do. I don't have to wallow in weird thoughts or stuff like that. It just gives me something to do to get dressed up. So I have to show you this outfit because it’s ridiculous,” she shared.

Many social media users in the comments shared their gratitude to Kathy for her honesty.

“Thank you for sharing & normalizing your struggles," one wrote. "You're incredible."

"It's fantastic that you're taking care of you! Those that suffer from this knows most don't have the energy to do it. You're inspiring others,” chimed in another.
