Family dynamics can be, well, complicated. It is difficult to navigate taking care of yourself while also remaining a loyal and loving family member. This can be compounded when friends are also involved. One Reddit user found herself in this tricky situation.
The 21-year-old woman found herself stuck between a rock and a hard place. One of her female friends started an inappropriate relationship with her married uncle. This Reddit user felt compelled to tell her cousin, who was a mutual friend of the woman with the inappropriate relationship, which did not go well. The Reddit poster wanted to get an outsider's opinion to see if her actions were wrong.
Things were getting weird.
“I(21f) have a best friend(21f) who is seeing my cousin’s(22m) father(49m),” the woman began. “At first, they were only exchanging texts. I thought it was weird, I let her know that I am not okay with her talking to my married uncle.”
And then the lies started.
“My best friend is the type to talk to anybody, as long as they have money,” the woman continued. “However, she told me that she stopped talking to him when she saw that I didn’t find the situation amusing. Recently, I heard that they went to dinner together so I confronted her. I told her that I was going to tell my cousin, who’s she’s also friend with. She begged me not to but I still did. I feel like I owe it to him because he’s my family and we grew up together, especially since his dad is still married to his mom.”
Things were definitely muddy.

Boom.
The situation got worse. “Long story short, my cousin confronted his dad, which caused a huge argument. He decided to put my best friend on blast by telling her mom and also threatening her. She got in trouble and some of our friends are not talking to her anymore.”
Whose fault is it?
“My best friend is very angry at me for telling him,” the original poster explained. “She texted me saying that she would have never told on me if I was texting her uncle. I simply replied, 'Well, I would have never texted your uncle to start with.' We’re basically not friends anymore. I was not expecting my cousin to react this way, but I do not regret telling him.” She then asked the internet to weigh in.
Most Reddit users agree that she was not in the wrong here.
“You did the right thing!” one user wrote. “She was hoping to have 0 consequences. She’s just mad no one is on her side and so is blaming you for her actions lol Hopefully this will be a lesson to leave married men alone. But to be honest by her reaction I have a feeling she’ll go on thinking she’s the victim here and won’t learn anything from this situation. You’re better off without her. Don’t feel any guilt for what you’ve done here. Well done.”
She needs a better best friend.
Many users agreed that the original poster should get a better best friend.
“Your friend was being shady AF and lied to you and she got what she got because of it,” wrote one user.
“You need better friends and definitely a better uncle,” another chimed in.
The uncle is creepy as well.
Reddit users were also quick to point out that the uncle should have known better. One user wanted to make sure everyone knew that “the uncle should be in trouble too.”
“I hope your cheater uncle got lit up by the family too,” wrote another user.
A big hug from Reddit.
Reddit users agreed that this woman can let herself off the hook. She did the right thing and is not in the wrong here. She deserves better friends and family members who don’t put her in these types of situations.
