Fun & Helpful Tips To Make A Family Summer Scrapbook

Scrapbooking became really popular a few years back. It was a good way for families to get creative and ensure that they'd never forget fond memories together. A scrapbook is a wonderful way to commemorate holidays, special achievements, and milestones. And it may be the best way to say goodbye to summer.

With the years we've all had recently, this summer was highly anticipated. Not only did many popular vacation destinations open up again, but travel became safer for those who opted to get vaccinated. For some of us, it was the first time to see family members who lived far away. This summer was an excellent reminder that seeing family can help us find strength within ourselves.

Plus, it was summer. With pools, barbecues, and the beach, of course it was a great season. Here are some great ways for scrapbook beginners to guarantee that it's one you'll never forget.

It's often monumentally hard to remember to print out photos you took, especially since your phone makes them so easy to store and search through. But tangible albums are a wonderful keepsake, so going to a site like Shutterfly is well worth your time. These sites almost always have sales and make the printing process incredibly easy.

When you're printing out photos, figure out if you want to create a theme. For example, maybe you want to dedicate a scrapbook to the water park you went to. See if you have enough photos to be able to tell a full story. Remember, there's no rule in scrapbooking. Figuring out as you go along is part of the fun.

Choose the Right Type of Scrapbook for You

You might not believe it, but there are plenty of different scrapbook types out there, and they all work for different people. Sometimes, you might not know which kind you prefer until you get started. For many people, a scrapbook with photo windows is the ideal choice, especially for photo-heavy pages. But there are also ringed scrapbooks that contain heavier black paper that's more ideal for memorabilia. A dry-mount album is great if you have a lot of stuff to add. Many of them also come with a bunch of corner stickers to help you secure your photos.

Make It a Family Project by Giving Pages to Your Kids

It's only fun when everyone gets involved. Let your kids decorate some pages by themselves to include in the album. That'll make them even more fun to look at later. Plus, if you have younger kids, it'll be a great way to capture their artistic skills and creativity at that age point. Remember, scrapbooks are all about saving memories. So it's important for everyone to get a chance to fill it in with their best memories and moments.

You can also turn your summer scrapbook into a tradition. Have your kids answer questions about what they're looking forward to most next summer. Or ask them about their favorite summer song or movie. Each year you make a scrapbook, you'll be able to witness growth.

Don't Skimp on the Art Supplies

Yes, scrapbooks can be classy. But it's better if they're fun. Don't be afraid to embrace pops of color and glitter. Glitter by itself can be messy, but a glitter pen or glitter glue may make things much easier.

For younger kids, seasonal stickers can also make a big impact. Stickers are just as fun now as they were back in the day and can add a ton of life to your scrapbook page.

Thin-tipped markers are a great way to add captions or text without taking over a full page. In order to preserve memories, it's smart to write down a few words about where you went or how you felt. That way, when you look back, you'll have an accurate memory of the fun you had.

Scrapbook Together

Set a date and time for it, pull out your supplies, and work on it together as a family. Not only will you be preserving memories, but you'll be making new ones. It's important to make sure your kids know that art and creative projects are important.

Plus, being together is a great way to gain more ideas and insights. It's also a good time to reminisce on summer altogether. If you generally find that it's difficult communicating with your family, talking about a common interest is a great way to get a conversation moving.

Buy Smaller Scrapbooks for Your Children

If your kids really love the idea of scrapbooking, giving them their own small scrapbook is a great way for them to preserve memories and feel in control of their own project. As their parents, you should always encourage your kids to keep their precious memories sacred. Looking back at a scrapbook can help them on a sad day when they're feeling down. Or it can simply serve as a wonderful way to store mementos so that they don't get lost in the house.

Smaller scrapbooks are also a great way for them to practice. Do you have preteens? Then this DIY scrapbook is a fun way to encourage them to create.

Don't Aim for Perfection

Sure, your kids might not draw the straightest lines. Or it's possible their captions are hard to read. Don't pressure them to make something you can show off on Instagram. Let them follow their heart and have fun with it. Arts and crafts are meant to be fun, and you don't want to make the process traumatic for them. Aim for imperfection. Offer help and suggestions, but only when asked.

Create a Space Solely for Scrapbooking

Once your summer scrapbook is done, put it in a safe place. But if the project was a lot of fun — and something you might do year-round — then it makes sense to carve out a craft area in your home. That way, you'll have all the supplies you need when you're ready.

If you're low on space, consider buying an art cart. It's the easiest way to make sure everything's organized and ready for action without taking up too much space. (Plus, it's easy to transport from room to room!)
