The New ‘Little Mermaid’ Remake Might Include A Subtle Slam Against The Princess Of Wales

It seems like you can't turn on the news or read an article without learning something about the British royal family. The Windsors certainly have good public relations people working to keep them constantly in the limelight. And everyone has an opinion about the ongoing estrangement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the family — even fictional characters.

Page Six is reporting that an unknown movie critic saw an early screening of the new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid and claims that there are several subtle clues implying that Ariel is on Harry and Meghan’s side. Ariel not only wants to be part of our world but also wants to give us her hot take. She’s got her voice back, and she is not afraid to use it.

There are similarities between Ariel, Prince Eric, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle, one of which is race. In this film, Ariel is played by Halle Bailey, who is a Black actress just like Meghan. Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, is white just like real-life Prince Harry.

One scene, though, does not mince words. “Ariel has sacrificed her voice in order to get to the surface and Prince Eric. She can’t speak so he tries to guess her name,” this unnamed source said.

“His first guess is Diana,” the source continued. “His second guess is Catherine, but after [Ariel gives a disgusted] reaction, he [concludes] ‘OK, definitely not Catherine.’”

For those readers not in the know, Diana was the name of Prince Harry’s mother. Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William, is married to Catherine “Kate” Middleton. Meghan and Kate have had a bumpy relationship.

This source believes Disney knew exactly what it was doing by choosing these particular names.

“Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental,” the source said.

In 2021, Meghan compared her tenuous standing in the royal family to the classic Disney animated film during her interview with Oprah. When she was stressed after her wedding because of navigating her new extended family, she would watch the film. She could not help but draw parallels between her current situation and the film.

“I went, ‘Oh my God, she falls in love with the prince and because of that she loses her voice,’” Meghan revealed to Oprah. Her life was imitating art. Now it seems the art is responding to Meghan and giving her support.

Just like Ariel, Meghan got her voice back. She and Harry stepped away from being working members of the royal family to create their own path in the world. It seems to be working, as Meghan was just honored at the Ms. Foundation's Women of Vision Awards on May 16.
