Sometimes good old-fashioned kindness comes through for a win in the end.
A server named Annie was working a shift at the diner where she worked when she noticed an older man come in on his own. He was sat at one of her tables, and when she asked him what he wanted to eat, he ordered a single piece of cake.
After she asked him if that would be all, he divulged that it was his birthday and he came out to celebrate with a piece of cake because it was something that he used to do with his wife every year before she died.
“It’s been quite a lonely day, so I came here to be reminded of my wife’s love. It was her favorite restaurant,” the man explained.
Annie’s heart immediately went out to this older gentleman. She decided to ask him for his name so that she could bring him an entire birthday cake with a proper dedication written on it. The man told Annie that his name was Dean, and she told him that she would be right back.
When the cake was ready, Annie had the rest of the staff come out and sing Dean "Happy Birthday." Dean appeared to be very touched, as he couldn’t stop smiling. Annie told him to blow out his candles and make a wish.

Annie decided to sit down with Dean while he enjoyed a slice of his cake. He told her that it had been a long time since anyone had sung him "Happy Birthday" since his wife died.
Annie told Dean that the birthday cake was on the house, but unfortunately, she had to get back to her tables. Annie was going to pay for the cake out of her own pocket, but she didn’t want Dean to know that.
