Paul Reubens, known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, has died at the age of 70, according to a post on his official Facebook page. According to the post, the actor died last night. He had been fighting cancer for years. A statement from the actor was also released after his death, in which he apologized for being private about having cancer for six years.
"Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years," he said in the statement. "I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you."
The post also recognized Paul for his "positivity" and "wit."
"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," the post said. "Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit."
Paul rose to fame after starring in Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, later starring in the sequel, Big Top Pee-wee, in 1988 and a third film as recently as 2016. His show, Pee-wee's Playhouse, ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. He was involved in various other projects over the years.

"A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit," the post concluded.
