Georgia Father And Son Unknowingly Give A Ride To An Accused Murderer

It is always nice to help out a stranger, but one also has to be careful. A Georgia man and his son claim to have been in a potentially dangerous situation. They believe they gave a ride to an accused murder suspect with a severed head in a duffle bag the same day he was arrested.

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, authorities announced they were searching for Keegan Phillips, who was wanted in connection with a body found in Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. Unaware of this, that same day Russell Jimmerson and his son picked up someone who matched Phillips’ description. They say his bag smelled awful as they believe it contained the head of his alleged victim.

Jimmerson likes to help those in need. "He just stuck his hand out, just very quickly," he recalled to WXIA. “I told my son, 'Let's get him.' I help everybody. He'd been up all night, walking from Rabun County.”

According to Jimmerson, he thought nothing of the situation until he talked to a friend later that day.

"You won't believe what happened," Russell claimed his friend told him. "A guy in Rabun County murdered someone last night and has their head. And I said, 'Man, you won't believe what I'm fixing to tell you. There's a smell in this car that's awful.'"

"My buddy said, 'Is this a joke? Did you pick up the hitchhiker?' I said, 'No, I really did,'" Russell added.

At this time, authorities have not confirmed Jimmerson’s story. It is unknown if he actually picked up Phillips or if the body found had a severed head. It is believed the body is that of Angela Ledford, but an official positive identification from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab has not yet been announced.
