A tragic accident occurred in Las Vegas in 2019. Timika Thomas was undergoing IVF treatment to grow her family when she was mistakenly given an abortion pill instead of fertility medication at her local CVS. This caused her early-stage pregnancy to be terminated.
Timika had her Fallopian tubes removed, so she and her husband turned to IVF because it implants embryos directly into the uterus. She just had two embryos transferred when the mistake happened and was prescribed medication to help her body stay pregnant. The expensive procedure was not covered by insurance.
“They just killed my baby,” Timika stated. “Both my babies, because I transferred two embryos.” She was given misoprostol.
Timika took her complaint to the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy, which discovered multiple mistakes. The pharmacists could not read the doctor’s handwriting so they guessed instead of calling the doctor. They also did not go over with Timika how to properly take the medication, which they are required to. This could have alerted Timika to the problem.

The pharmacist tried to blame CVS and its staffing shortages. "You cannot expect one pharmacist to be doing drop-off, pickup, verifying prescriptions, calling providers, calling patients," she stated.
“I understand that people make mistakes. But that mistake took something from me,” Timika countered.
In the end, the pharmacy was fined $10,000. The incident has now passed the statute of limitations, so Timika is not able to sue.
