Michael March of Brooklyn, New York, didn't go anywhere without his dog, Shadow, a beautiful 2-year-old cane corso.
In February 2021, Michael and Shadow headed off to the store to pick up some snacks. He told his fiancée, AnnMarie Fasano, that they'd be right back.
Tragically, Michael — a surgical tech and frontline worker — crashed his vehicle just minutes later. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Shadow survived the crash, but he was in such a state of panic and terror that he ran from the wreckage and disappeared into the woods beside the parkway.
AnnMarie had planned to marry Michael on his 43rd birthday. Now the devastated medical worker had lost the two loves of her life in one day.
In the midst of her grief, AnnMarie couldn't get Shadow off her mind. She was desperate to find him — especially since New York was in a state of emergency due to the winter storm. She couldn't eat or sleep because she was so consumed with worry over Shadow's well-being in the frigid temperatures.
For the next six days, local headlines focused on Michael's tragic death and the dog who fled the scene of the fatal crash. AnnMarie begged her community for help in finding Shadow, but it wasn't looking good.
Nearly a week later, AnnMarie smiled for the very first time. Watch the video below to see why.
