Unless you were living under a rock, you probably know all about the now infamous Oscar slap that occurred on March 27, 2022. Will Smith struck Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. It has long been known she suffers from alopecia. Turns out, there is more to the story.
Jada is making the press rounds to promote her new memoir, Worthy, which comes out on October 17, 2023. She revealed that Chris once asked her out when rumors were circulating that she and Will were getting divorced.
Jada and Will’s marriage has long been a topic of public speculation. She recently confessed they have been privately living separate lives since 2016 but are not divorced on paper. One summer, Chris believed they were heading toward divorce.
“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce,” Jada explained to People magazine. “And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I'd love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren't you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”

Jada has not spoken to Chris since the night of the slap. She wants Will and him to work it out on their own terms. She admits she has been hurt by Chris in the past but it is part of public life and does not pass judgment on other people's art and self-expression.
“[Do I have] any desire to talk to Chris? Here's my desire: I just hope that all the misunderstanding around this can be cleared up and that there can be peace,” she stated.
