For Sandy Sikorski, 70, and Ken Steinkamp 75, their journey toward engagement took a unique and memorable twist during a simple dinner at their favorite Rhode Island restaurant. What began as a casual evening enjoying a dish of clams transformed into a tale of love, serendipity, and a rare pearl that would soon become the symbol of the enduring bond.
The couple’s remarkable story began when they decided to savor a delicious plate of clams at their beloved restaurant in Westerly, Rhode Island. As Sandy bit down on something she didn’t expect, her initial thought was that she had lost a tooth. But her surprise grew exponentially when she realized that what she had bitten into was not a dental problem but a rare and precious pearl.
The pearl that Sandy bit into has a name! It’s called the Mercenaria pearl. The odds of someone biting into a pearl that was inside a clam that was served to them is 1 in 1,000,000. Inspired by this extremely rare moment, Ken saw the opportunity to create an engagement ring that would encapsulate their love story. He stated, “I said we gotta, we gotta make a proposal out of this thing. This is going to be official.”
With the pearl as the centerpiece, Ken designed a ring that symbolized the uniqueness of their relationship, a love as rare and beautiful as the pearl itself. Marc Fishbone from Black Orchid Jewelers stated, “I was surprised to see this size and the clarity. No blemishes in the luster of the pearl, it’s unusual.”
