Outrage Erupts Over Bodycam Footage Of Police Officers Handcuffing A 4th Grader At School

A resurfaced bodycam video from Seminole County, Florida, has ignited nationwide outrage and concern after showing a distressing incident involving a 9-year-old student. The footage captures the shocking moment when law enforcement officers handcuffed the fourth grader, sparking debates about the use of force in dealing with unruly children in schools. The incident has prompted widespread condemnation, calls for accountability, and legal action by the child’s parents.

In the video, the 9-year-old student can be seen throwing a tantrum inside his school. The situation escalated as the child uncontrollably tossed items while teachers attempted to calm him down. School authorities, fearing for the safety of others, called the police for assistance. Officers from Seminole County responded to the call, initially observing the situation in hopes that the child would calm down.

However, as the child’s behavior persisted, law enforcement officers decided to handcuff the fourth grader. The young boy was restrained for a staggering 13 minutes until he finally calmed down. The incident, captured on bodycam, has raised serious questions about the use of force in managing behavioral issues, particularly involving elementary school children.

The parents of the 9-year-old boy have since filed a lawsuit against the school district and law enforcement officers, asserting that the use of handcuffs was unnecessary and constituted unreasonable force. Inside Edition noted, “Police Department protocol doesn’t allow kids under the age of 12 to be placed in handcuffs unless they pose a danger to those around them.”

A similar incident happened in 2019 in Orlando, Florida. Officers handcuffed and arrested a 6-year-old girl at a charter school for throwing a tantrum. She was handcuffed and arrested after throwing a tantrum. She was then put into the back of a police cruiser, taken to the juvenile detention center, and charged with misdemeanor battery. The charges were later dropped.
