In a harrowing medical journey that was told on TikTok, Ohio native Brandon Baker, who is in his 20s, shared his traumatic experience of initially being diagnosed with the flu after having a broken tooth pulled. What followed was a seven-month odyssey of misdiagnoses, dramatic weight loss, and ultimately, a life-threatening blood infection.
Brandon’s ordeal began when he felt extremely sick while driving to work. Despite initially being diagnosed with the flu, his health continued to deteriorate. Struggling to digest food, he experienced significant weight loss, shedding nearly 50 pounds in the following weeks. Despite multiple visits to the doctor, his condition worsened, culminating in a frightening incident where he fell unconscious in the shower for almost half an hour.
As Brandon sought emergency medical attention, a new set of symptoms emerged. Diagnosed with meningitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia, doctors believed these ailments stemmed from a severe flu. Admitted to the hospital, Brandon faced challenges as the health care system grappled with a particularly bad flu season and understaffing. Fluid from the shower was extracted from his lungs, but the root cause of his breathing difficulties remained elusive.
After being transferred to a state hospital, the shocking revelation unfolded, Brandon was suffering from a severe, full-body blood infection nearing sepsis. Bacterial endocarditis, a life-threatening inflammation of the heart’s chambers and valves, was identified as the consequence of the infection. A massive infection on one of the leaflets of Brandon’s mitral valve was discovered, prompting a 10-day hospital stay and a subsequent six-week course of at-home antibiotics.
Brandon traced the origin of his health nightmare back to a pulled, broken tooth seven months before the ordeal began. Due to insurance constraints, he had not addressed the dental issue promptly. Antibiotics were never administered during the dental procedure, which Brandon believes could have prevented the severe infection. The delay in dental care resulted in over $830,000 in medical debt.
