With the advent of food delivery apps and online ordering, the convenience of having meals delivered to your doorstep comes with its own set of challenges. A recent incident in California, which involved a Grubhub driver, was caught on camera.
The driver appears to be enjoying a customer's meal before delivering it. The video has gone viral and sparked outrage, with calls for accountability from both the restaurant owner and the disgruntled customer.
The episode occurred at Mexihana’s Hibachi Grill in Long Beach, a Japanese Mexican fusion restaurant. Martin Luzanilla, the CEO of the establishment, became suspicious after seeing surveillance footage that showed a Grubhub driver appearing to indulge in a customer’s order while parked in front of the restaurant. Luzanilla recounted the unsettling discovery, saying, “I noticed that he was untying the bag and started chowing down on the food.”
Outraged by what he saw, the restaurant owner approached the delivery driver, who nonchalantly claimed the food was his lunch. Luzanilla said, “I went outside, and I was like, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, this is my lunch.” Accepting the explanation, he initially apologized, taking the driver at his word.
But a second review of the security footage revealed the true extent of the deception. The accompanying footage depicts the driver not only consuming the customer’s food but doing so with a lack of discretion. The driver reportedly tore into the packaging with his teeth, enjoying mouthfuls of the meal.
Realizing the severity of the situation, Luzanilla took immediate action, attempting to protect the customer from a tampered order. He contacted the customer multiple times, attempting to warn them about the compromised order. Unfortunately, it was too late. The driver already delivered the order and made sure to even repackage it to cover his tracks.

Being the amazing restaurant owner that he is, Luzanilla remade the customer's food himself and delivered it to them. Since this incident occurred, Grubhub has “suspended the driver” from the company, according to a spokesperson.
According to Luzanilla though, “The problem extends beyond simply a customer not receiving their order, as when there’s no security footage, it reflects poorly on the restaurant and not Grubhub.” This is definitely making me think twice about food delivery…
