Recent images of what students describe as “disgusting” school lunches have sparked outrage and concern among parents, board of education officials, and the wider community in New Jersey. The phenomenon, known as “lunch shaming,” gained attention as students shared unappetizing pictures of their meals on social media, prompting a collective call for answers and change within the education system.
As the new school year began, so did the disturbing trend of students sharing images of their unappetizing school lunches online. These photos, depicting lackluster and unpalatable meals, quickly gained traction on social media platforms. The term “lunch shaming” emerged as students expressed their discontent and frustration over the quality of the food provided during lunch hours.
The uproar has not been limited to social media; concerned parents and education officials have joined in demanding an explanation for the subpar quality of the meals served. Questions have been raised about the nutritional value, variety, and overall appeal of the lunches provided, with some likening the situation to a form of shaming for students.
Inside Edition reports: “In Paterson, New Jersey, parents are up in arms after images of moldy food and expired milk were shared online. Can you even tell what this is?” The program then shows viewers a picture of what looks like crispy old bacon, with maybe an egg … on a noticeably stale bun. I was way off because apparently, it’s supposed to be a chicken cheesesteak sandwich. I don’t think any person would guess that.
Kenneth Simmons, the Paterson Board of Education president said: “It is disgusting, and I definitely would not feed that to my children. I’m not sure that I would feed it to my pet!” Inside Edition explained before the pandemic, many schools used to make their lunches in the cafeteria but due to staffing shortages and budget issues, lunches are now prepared by outside vendors.
