"If someone had to die, I thought it should be me."

Bridger Walker was in his friend's backyard in Cheyenne, Wyoming, when a young German shepherd mix came charging straight toward his beloved 4-year-old sister.

As soon as the protective big brother saw the dog lunging toward her, he bravely stood between them. He went to grab her hand to pull her away.

But in the midst of saving his sister, Bridger became the victim of a brutal attack.

Before the pair of siblings could run off to safety, the dog bit Bridger in the cheek and wouldn't let go.

The little boy was left with wounds on his face and head. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent a two-hour surgery — and went home with about 90 stitches.

After Bridger's heroic actions, the incident went viral. He was later honored by his community with a very special award.
