Woman At Restaurant Bites Into Tiramisu Marked As Vegan & Dies From Severe Dairy Allergy

A 20-year-old Italian woman with a severe dairy allergy died after eating tiramisu that was labeled as vegan. Anna Bellisario went out for dinner in January 2023 with her boyfriend in Milan, Italy. Though they had dinner at a vegan chain called Flower Burger, Bellisario reportedly wanted to make sure that the tiramisu contained no dairy. Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera reported that Bellisario read the label on the tiramisu and also asked restaurant staff for more information. They assured her that it was safe for her to eat, but she began to get sick shortly after eating a piece of it.

Bellisario reportedly rushed to the bathroom to try to vomit, and took the asthma medication and cortisone she carried with her at all times. However, she went into anaphylactic shock. She was taken to the hospital but later died.

Corriere della Sera reported that the company that supplied the tiramisu to the vegan restaurant is being investigated for manslaughter. The Italian Ministry of Health took the tiramisu off the market after her death, out of concern that the labels on the tiramisu are not accurate because it seems to contain dairy.

Flower Burger, the restaurant that served the tiramisu thinking that it was vegan, shared a statement with the New York Post that said "the inquiries disclosed not only the presence of dairy traces but also identified casein itself as an ingredient. In fact, mascarpone was found, which proved fatal for the young girl."

The restaurant also maintains its "complete innocence in what happened" and instead blames the company that supplied the tiramisu.

“The news of Anna Bellisario’s death last year deeply saddened and shocked us, especially considering she was a cherished customer of ours," the restaurant added.
