Teen With Down Syndrome Didn’t Make Cheer Team, Still Masters Routine From The Sidelines

One teenager didn't allow her not making the cheerleading team get her out of the spirit! Emmie Tallent, a 13-year-old with Down syndrome, was shown cheering from the sidelines in a video posted to social media by her older sister, Sydnee. “Girl didn’t make the cheer team but she don’t care,” her sister wrote in the video. In the caption she added, “I aspire to have an ounce of her confidence. The team did not have a lot of spots and even neurotypical girls (who were much better than Emmie) didn’t make it! Emmie’s school is super, super supportive, but there are hard decisions that have to be made sometimes.”

The video so far garnered over 3 million views and 86,000 likes. The teen's family spoke to People about Emmie's spirit. When she didn't make the team, she couldn't comprehend it at first. “She didn’t understand even after the coach explained it and I explained it. She just kept repeating ‘I’m on the team!’" her mom, Lisa Tallent, said.

Emmie has been cheerleading since kindergarten. Once the fact that she didn't make the team set in, her older sister said her mood changed. “I think it didn’t set in until about a week later when we were talking about the upcoming game and she started tearing up." But that didn't stop her from showing up to the game and rocking the routine from the sidelines!
