College Student Takes A Plane To Get To Class Because It’s Cheaper Than Paying Rent

A student in Canada flies to class because it's cheaper than paying for an apartment in Vancouver. Tim Chen is in his last year at the University of British Columbia, and although he used to live closer to campus, he now saves money by staying with his parents in Calgary, he explained to CTV News. While it seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to get to class, Tim told the outlet that it's similar to taking a bus to get to campus. Flying from Calgary to Vancouver takes about one hour, and costs about $150 round trip.

On Reddit, the student explained that he has classes on campus only twice a week, so on those days, he flies to Vancouver in the morning and back to Calgary at night. "I found there’s absolutely saving on rent since I don’t need to pay rent in Calgary (live with my parents) except just casually paying for utilities, and it’s much cheaper than renting a 1b for 2k for more in Vancouver. Anyone doing the same thing or similar?" he wrote on Reddit.

Some who responded to the post were shocked, wondering if it was a joke.

Others said they thought their commutes were bad until they learned about Tim's commute to campus. Tim told CTV News that he used to rent a place in Vancouver, but after the price went up, he started to think about other options.

"When I checked the house price I thought, oh shoot, there was a big increase!" he explained to the outlet. “I need to pay like $2,500 for the rent, so I don't feel like it's viable."

On Reddit, he explained that he took seven round trip flights to get to campus and back in January. Since the round trip flight might cost about $150, Tim would've spent about $1,050 that month, compared to the $2,500 he would've spent to rent an apartment in Vancouver.

According to CTV News, the average one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver costs $2,100 per month.
