Tori Spelling Files For Divorce From Dean McDermott After 18 Years Of Marriage

Tori Spelling has officially filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years, Dean McDermott. The former couple's official date of separation is listed as June 17, 2023, which is when the 57-year-old Canadian actor posted to his Instagram platform that he and Tori had decided to go their separate ways, yet deleted it shortly after. The filing cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. It also requests for the court to award the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress with spousal support and terminate Dean's ability to receive the same support.

Tori asked for sole physical custody of the former couple's five children: 17-year-old Liam Aaron McDermott, 15-year-old Stella Doreen, 12-year-old Hattie Margaret, 11-year-old Finn Davey, and 7-year-old Beau Dean. She also asked for joint legal custody, with Dean's visitation rights to be determined at a later date.

There is no indication of whether or not the former couple had a prenuptial agreement. Tori also stated in the filing that the nature and extent of their respective properties have not been determined yet.

Tori and Dean got married on May 7, 2006, in a private ceremony in Fiji. They initially met in 2005 while filming Mind Over Murder. The former couple renewed their vows in a 2010 ceremony.

Unfortunately, Tori and Dean began going through a rough patch when he publicly admitted to having an affair in 2014. "I feel shame. I've never felt shame before," he said at the time. "You were at a Christmas event, and I was [expletive] around. That's disgusting. That's disgusting."

She noted later on that the two were trying to work through things. "It's something that's going to take time to get through." In 2015, Dean seemed to believe the marriage had improved. "What we went through publicly, I learned a lot, I wouldn't do it again, at the end of the day we're together, we're happy and we're working on our relationship and we have a beautiful family and a beautiful life," he said at the time. "It all worked out in the end."

In a 2020 interview, Tori admitted to feeling like Dean would one day cheat on her. “I was like, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me," she shared. "So when it happened, I was like, 'See, I always thought from day one he was going to cheat on me,' and it wasn't about him, that was about me. I was like, 'Okay, I know I'm not good enough,' that's how I felt about myself and one day he's going to realize that and he's gonna find someone else."

In 2021, the author shared a holiday card to her Instagram with Dean missing from the family photo. A source close to the couple shared at the time that Tori still had “major trust issues” and their relationship was never “fully repaired” after Dean's affair.

In November 2023, Dean opened up about the downfall of their marriage over time. He shared that they hadn't been sleeping in the same bed anymore and their marriage consisted of constant “anger and yelling" most times. “It ended up with me drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of [narcotics] by myself with, you know, a beautiful family in the other room,” he said. “That's what it led to and that's what led to the brokenness. I couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t live that life anymore.”
