Gillian Anderson Remembers Going Back To Work On ‘The X-Files’ 10 Days After Giving Birth

Gillian Anderson’s first major television role was as Dana Scully in the hit show The X-Files. Because she was relatively unknown, there was enormous pressure on her to not mess up this opportunity. She also met and fell in love with production designer Clyde Klotz during filming. She soon became pregnant with her first child, Piper, during the first season.

Because of the pressure to succeed, Gillian came back to work on The X-Files just 10 days after giving birth. She opened up about this on the Today on April 3, 2024.

Gillian wouldn’t do the same thing today. "If I didn’t feel so guilty that I got pregnant in the first season, I might have taken better care of myself and been more thoughtful about what I needed for my best interest at the time," she explained. She knows better now.

"But I think I was so wrapped up in, 'I almost got fired, I’ll mess this up, I’ll do whatever they say.' So yeah, 10 days after a C-section," she explained. "But we’re still talking about it, right? It’s interesting. Whatever it was, 30 years ago." It does make for a good story.

Gillian is now a mother of three. She shares Piper with ex-husband Clyde. She also has two sons Oscar, 15, and Felix, 17, whom she shares with ex Mark Griffiths.

In her book Want she explores female empowerment. "Women struggle to ask for what they want, both at work, in a relationship, and in the bedroom. And so, it’s worth continuing to talk about,” she mused.
