21-Year-Old Cisgender Man Says He Is Mistaken For A Woman Every Day: ‘A Blessing’

A young barista in Kentucky is going viral for his “androgynous” looks. Lucas McCarson is a cisgender male who works as a barista. He gets mistaken for a trans person or woman almost daily.

He opened up on TikTok about one such encounter where a Christian woman tried to “save” him. His post has been viewed over 9 million times. It is not an isolated incident. Experiences like this have given Lucas a unique perspective. He empathizes with the microaggressions transgender people and women have to go through on a daily basis. He seems to have a level head on his shoulders.

According to Lucas, this unnamed woman first "looked him up and down" as if she was trying to figure him out. She then took hold of his hands. “As a Christian woman, I feel determined to let you know that God has you in his hands,” she stated. Because Lucas was working in a customer service position, he tried to laugh it off. This woman was determined to get her message across. "Know that God can bring you back from … this," she added. Lucas knows that people like this woman are “usually of the hating genre” so he didn't let it impact his self-worth. He went on with this day.

Lucas has a healthy outlook on his appearance. “I learned to flow with my androgyny instead of feeling like it was holding me back,” he told the Daily Mail. “I am both a balance of feminine and masculine, because there are no rules. I just happen to look the way I do and I take that as a blessing.”

Lucas can’t escape the perception of others. “I am mistaken for a woman every day, in almost everything I do,” he explained. This has taught him some valuable lessons. “As a cisgender man, this gives me insight into how women and trans people are treated every day, and though I do not live my life as a woman, I understand how much respect women deserve and how much courage and resilience they have,” he concluded.
