The Kansas City Chiefs are making headlines again. This time it has nothing to do with the Super Bowl. On Saturday May 11, 2024, kicker Harrison Butker gave a controversial graduation speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.
The remarks were full of sexist and homophobic comments. Many are speaking out against it. This includes the National Football League, which made it clear that Butker was not representing it or its values.
Jonathan Beane works as the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. He made sure to distance the organization from the person. “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” he explained.
“His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” he concluded.

Harrison stated “the women” present in the audience “have had the most diabolical lies told to you.” He mused that women might be excited about their future “successful careers in the world” but that is the wrong aspect of life to focus on. Instead women should put their aspirations towards becoming homemakers.
He also addressed the men. “Part of what plagues our society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities. As men, we set the tone of the culture,” he mused. “Be unapologetic in your masculinity. Fight against the cultural emasculation of men,” he urged.
Harrison also took aim at Pride month, the celebration of LGBTQ+ community every June. He called it a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it.”
