In early 2024, David Foster and Katharine McPhee‘s son Rennie went viral for his phenomenal drumming skills. Fans were floored by a video of the 3-year-old expertly playing in the drum pit at one of his parents’ concerts. Unfortunately, Katharine recently shared that their son “lost interest” in drums — and David is “devastated.”
As a refresher, David, 75, and Katharine, 40, met during Season 5 of American Idol when he mentored her in the singing competition. He went on to play piano at her 2008 wedding to Nick Cokas. After Katharine divorced Nick and David divorced Yolanda Hadid, they started appearing together in public in 2017, eventually marrying in 2019. They welcomed their son, Rennie, in February 2021.

In February 2024, Rennie stole the show with his drumming at one of his parents’ An Intimate Evening tour shows in Washington, DC. The 3-year-old played the drum kit on stage alongside David’s drummer, JR Robinson. Although Rennie wasn’t mic’d, his skills at such a young age were apparent.
Rennie may have gone viral in February 2024, but his parents have shared impressive videos of his drumming beforehand. In January, David shared an Instagram video showcasing his son’s skills, writing, “❗️ Drumming into the new year ❗️#still2yearsold,”
Meanwhile, Katharine posted a clip via Instagram of her son, then 2, drumming on a pint-sized kit in October 2023, writing, “coming for ya @travisbarker.”
“If you’ve noticed, we’ve kind of stopped posting so many videos. He’s not as interested as he was,” Katharine told People in an article published on November 21. “We were never making him play. We were never demanding that he play. But he’s just sort of lost interest.”

Instead, Rennie seems to be focusing on more typical 3-year-old activities.
“He’s very much into me. Obviously, I’ll take it ‘cause I love it, but he’s really into everything Mommy,” Katharine told People. “Just being active and running and playing with his toys and things like that, so he’s just taken a little hiatus.”
She added, “My husband’s devastated about it.”
“It was pretty amazing,” Foster told People in March of his 3-year-old’s impressive drumming skills. “He’s studied our drummer JR Robinson, who’s incredible, for the last year and a half and he’s figured it out on his own.”
“Every parent’s child is special,” Foster, also a father to five adult daughters, Allison, Amy, Sara, Erin, and Jordan, added. “All my children are special, and they all have unique talents, just like every kid does.”
