Cop Resigns After Locking Himself In Backseat With Suspect: ‘He Wanted To Get With Me’

A San Diego Police Department officer resigned after locking himself in the backseat of his patrol car with a woman that he was taking to Las Colinas Women's Detention Center. The officer, Anthony Hair, resigned the month after the incident occurred in August 2023. Hair said he was checking on the woman due to a suspected medical emergency when the door accidentally shut, reported FOX 11.

But NBC San Diego reports that his bodycam was turned off and he didn't call for medical assistance. Instead, he called a fellow officer to help him get out of the backseat.

Bodycam footage captured Hair's interactions with the woman prior to the moment when he got in the backseat. The suspect asked him a series of questions, including "Are you married?" and "Are you single?"

CBS 8 reported that the suspect also said to Hair: "I'm down to f— right now."

He reportedly responded with, "Don't say that right now…Don't say that right now because everything is being recorded right now."

At one point, the suspect also moaned, FOX 11 reported. A recording also captured Hair asking several questions that the woman didn't respond to: "Are you still up?" "Are you doing good back there?" and "What's going on?" as per FOX 11.

The GPS tracking system showed that Hair's car slowed down to 7 miles per hour before stopping at 1:34 a.m., CBS 8 reported.

The outlet also reported that the officer called for help from another officer more than 20 minutes after the vehicle stopped, and the other officer arrived more than an hour after the vehicle stopped.

The woman told investigators that she and Hair did not engage in sexual contact, NBC San Diego reported, but she did say that he asked for her number and wanted to meet after she was released from jail.

“He wanted to get with me when I was done with the warrant or whatever I got arrested for,” the woman said, reported NBC San Diego.
