Rihanna Talks Candidly About Postpartum Hair Loss: ‘That Was Not On The Pamphlet’

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, postpartum hair loss is normal. It occurs because of declining estrogen levels and could be more accurately labeled as “excessive hair shedding.” No matter what you call it, it's not fun to go through. Rihanna opened up about this to Refinery29 on June 12, 2024. Thankfully the condition is only temporary.

Rihanna is launching her own Fenty Hair line. She is a mother of two sons RZA, 2, and Riot, 10 months, whom she shares with A$AP Rocky. She experienced hair loss after both births.

Rihanna was not prepared for the hair loss. "Oh my gosh, girl. That was not on the pamphlet," she joked. "I did not expect it to happen in waves, either. I thought it would just happen and grow back."

"But it went this spot, then this spot, then this spot," she went on to say pointing to different spots on her head. The process was frustrating for her. "And at that point, you're just like, 'All right, enough is enough.'"

At a certain point, Rihanna just rolled with it. She came up with new hairdos to cope. "I learned to embrace that in itself. That just actually made me get a little more creative and clever with my hairstyles," she concluded.

Many in the comments section on Instagram were thankful for Rihanna’s honesty.

"This is so important to share," one user gushed. "We need to discuss such things related to pregnancy and postpartum. Women deserve to know what body changes they’ll face, how to prepare for them (if possible) and how to live and find support. Inspiring!"
