In a digital twist to age-old traditions, grieving families are now using QR codes on gravestones to share cherished memories of their loved ones. This innovative approach transforms visits to cemeteries into opportunities to relive and honor the lives of the deceased in a more personal and interactive way.
One poignant example is a mother visiting the graves of her three children, tragically killed by a drunk driver. Instead of merely laying flowers and reflecting in silence, she and her husband are able to relive their most cherished memories with their children through QR code medallions affixed to the headstone.
By simply scanning these codes with a smartphone, treasured moments and mini biographies of the dearly departed appear instantly, allowing for a deeper connection and remembrance. Brian Kunz, the founder and CEO of Turning Hearts, explained the impact of this technology in an interview with Inside Edition. "We have a lot of families that really do it to help bring kind of closure to what they're going through," he said.
Christie Askew's experience highlights the emotional and lasting benefits of this technology. Her husband Daniel passed away from Huntington's disease two years ago, and the QR code on his gravestone has played a vital role in keeping his memory alive for their children. "I love that anybody that goes to his gravesite, they can get to know the man that's laid to rest there. Not just a name and some dates, but they get to know him," Christie shared with Inside Edition.
The use of QR codes on gravestones is gaining popularity as it offers a modern solution to an age-old need: remembering and honoring those who have died. By scanning the code, visitors can access photos, videos, written stories, and other personal artifacts that paint a fuller picture of the deceased’s life.
