Getting drunk before appearing on The Price Is Right is actually pretty common, according to host Drew Carey. In an interview with TV Insider, Drew revealed that it's "not unusual" for contestants to rely on a bit of "liquid courage."
"That happens here all the time," Drew said during the interview. "They’ll have a gummy or I’ll smell alcohol on their breath. Not unusual." However, some contestants have stood out to Drew, including one who "was tripping on mushrooms."
"He came with a bunch of friends. He was a sketch [comedy] guy," Drew said, adding that he only learned that the contestant did comedy when he later went to United Citizens Brigade, a sketch comedy theater.
He didn't know what the contestant did for work because when he asked the contestant what he did for a living, the contestant lied.

"I asked him what he did for a living. And he goes, 'I’m a skateboarding rabbi.' He didn’t think he was going to get picked, and he totally tripped," Drew told TV Insider.
The contestant Drew was referring to posted a video of what happened when he was on the show around the time that it aired.
He captioned the video with, "Hi. I'm an idiot and I took mushrooms, got drunk, then went on The Price Is Right and lied to Drew Carey's melting face. (HE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN NICER)."
Although contestants might get drunk — and lie about their professions — sometimes, Drew told TV Insider that he loves them. They're actually his "favorite part of the show."
"They’re normal people that live normal lives. This is average America right here. There are no CEOs, ultra-rich upper management. They don’t come to The Price Is Right," Drew explained to TV Insider.
"These are middle class, working class. Every religion. It’s a cross-section of America. Regular people are more interesting than celebrities," he continued. "Honestly. They’ve all had their own problems to overcome and their own demons, to get their own special lives. I learn more from them than I do from anybody."
Drew has been hosting the show since 2007 and told TV Insider that he has no plans to quit anytime soon.
"I do have a goal: I want to keep going until I die. This is my 18th season. I’ve got to get the 35 and 41 so I can catch Bob Barker and Pat Sajak," he said.
