Woman Spends Only $11 & Just 12 Hours Recreating Iconic Crochet Dress Worn By Taylor Swift

When Kayla Benedetti saw Taylor Swift wearing a crochet dress, she was "very tempted to hop in [her] car and go to [Joann Fabrics]." She is both a Swiftie and an avid crocheter, which made her feel like it was her "duty to make" the crochet dress she saw Taylor wearing in photos on Monday, June 24, 2024. Kayla ended up recreating her own version of the dress Taylor wore, and she spent only $11 on the materials she used, reported People. The process took 12 hours and she documented it on TikTok in a series of videos.

"Any other crocheters think the same thing when these pictures dropped??" Kayla captioned her first video about the dress. TikTokers encouraged her to make it, and some asked if it was beginner-friendly. Kayla described it as "SO simple!" in a comment.

"I was like, 'Oh my gosh, my worlds are colliding,'" Kayla, who works as an art teacher, told People. Because so many of her followers encouraged her to make the dress after her initial video, she ended up doing "a crochet-along on TikTok, sharing each step of the process," she explained to the outlet.

Kayla started by telling everyone which colors of yarn she selected and why. Many people followed along as she went through the steps she took to recreate the dress.

When she finished both the front and back panels, she tried the "dress" on, though she acknowledged that it looked more like "a potato sack" at that point since she hadn't sewn it together or added sleeves. "Cutest potato sack I’ve ever seen!!" one person commented on her progress update.

Though Kayla originally thought she would recreate Taylor's dress, which included bell sleeves, she explained in a video she decided to not add sleeves to her own dress. "I don't think I'll wear it if it has sleeves," she explained. "I spent like 10 hours total making this and I want to be able to wear it."

In her final video for the series, she shared the dress she created and captioned the video with, "Taylor Swifts crochet dress (kayla’s version) (without sleeves)."

" You mean to tell me you created this in checks notes TWO DAYS!?!?" one TikTok user commented on the final video in the series. "Amazing job!!! ."

"Did you even sleep!? Wowwww! Amazing," another person commented.

Kayla told People that she started the project at 7:30 a.m. one day, then finished it by noon the following day.

She might use her spare yarn from the project to create a matching dress for her cat, she told the outlet.
