You can have a great time at the fair. The food, the games, and the rides all make for memorable experiences at a fraction of the cost of more popular and larger amusement parks. The fair provides its own type of thrills, but the lower prices and transient nature of a fair can sometimes mean compromised safety standards. This was certainly the case with the operation of a spinning ride at the Cozumel Fair in Mexico.

A 13-year-old girl flew from a ride set up in Quintana Roo Park and injured her hip, the Mirror reports. The incident happened after the ride’s operator failed to secure the safety bar designed to keep passengers inside the attraction. Another fair attendee captured the accident on camera. As the ride began, the fair-goers were excited, screaming at the motion. There were 12 other passengers on the ride.

But as the ride continued spinning there was a loud thud. The sound was from the moment the girl’s body flew from her seat and hit the ground. The video shows the unnatural position the girl was laying on the platform in. The Mirror reports that she looked to be both in shock and in intense pain.
A worker immediately rushed to her side. The video ends there, but other riders later offered their take on the experience. A mother and son claimed that they clung to the ride of “dear life,” trying to avoid suffering a similar fate. In the moments afterward, authorities launched an investigation into the ride. Naturally, they found that it was not compliant with safety measures.
A Civil Protection spokesperson said, “Our directorate in Cozumel acted decisively by closing down a ride at the local fair after a minor suffered a fall while it was in operation. The accident resulted in injuries to the minor, who was taken to the hospital by her parents for medical treatment.” Subsequently, the Civil Protection issued a fine to the responsible parties.
“We will not tolerate negligence that endangers the lives of fair visitors and we require operators to strictly follow the safety rules,” the spokesperson said.
