What to Know
Jane Fonda is reflecting on her last memory of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The night before Rob and Michelle were found slain in their home, they attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party with their son Nick Reiner, who has been charged with their murders. Jane, 87, recalled seeing Rob and Michelle “looking healthy and happy” on Saturday, December 13.
Hearing the news of their tragic deaths has left Jane “reeling with grief” and feeling “stunned.”
Jane shared a photo of the couple on social media.
In her post, she recalled how Rob and Michele were committed to making the world a better place. “Rob and Michele Reiner were wonderful, caring, smart, funny, generous people, always coming up with ideas for how to make the world better, kinder,” she wrote.
She also noted that they had gotten involved in political activism alongside her. Jane recently revived the Committee for the First Amendment, a free speech initiative originally created by her father during the McCarthy Era. “They had been helping me launch the Committee for the First Amendment,” she continued. “I saw them night before last looking healthy and happy. I am reeling with grief. Stunned.”
Witnesses have said they noticed Rob and Nick fighting at the party.
Though Jane did not describe witnessing anything concerning in her post, some witnesses have claimed that Rob and his son Nick got into a “very loud argument” while at Conan’s Christmas party. A source told People that Nick’s behavior at the event was “freaking everyone out.”
A report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Nick only attended the party because his parents were worried about his wellbeing. According to the publication, Conan didn’t invite Nick to the party, but Rob and Michele asked if they could bring him because “they were reluctant to leave him home alone.”
Nick allegedly had been staying with the couple “under their watchful supervision” due to his “extreme and stressful” behavior that “had grown degrees even more concerning in recent weeks.”
Per the report, Nick’s presence at the party seemed to make some attendees uncomfortable, as he reportedly “wandered around the party and interrupted conversations” to ask people who they were and whether they were famous.
According to TMZ, the family left the party after Rob and Nick’s argument. Rob and Michele were found slain in their home the next day, on Sunday, December 14.
