What to Know
Some conservatives have been pushing the false claim that Texas Democrat James Talarico is transgender, and Stephen Miller joined them when responding to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on X. His response backfired: the DNC told him to shut up and called him ugly.
The drama started when the DNC posted about Talarico’s campaign. They shared a photo of the Texas Senate hopeful and wrote, “Fired up. Ready to go. It’s time to take back Texas.” Miller re-posted it and wrote, “The Democrats made history in Texas by nominating their first transgender senate candidate.” Talarico is not trans.
Democrats had a succinct response.

“shut up you ugly f—,” the account wrote back. The response quickly went viral and reactions were very mixed. While some people found it hilarious and warranted, others argued it’s actually pretty immature and embarrassing. Of course, conservatives have a reputation for behaving this way on social media.
In response to the X post, one person wrote, “It’s well overdue that you guys stop holding this doctrine ‘When they go low we go high,’ it’s not working with them. Congratulations.” Those who appreciated the DNC’s response said it seemed like Democrats were “finally fighting fire with fire.” They see it as the exact energy that is needed right now.
But not everyone loves the idea of Democrats stooping to that level. And some people also find it performative, whether it’s humorous or not. “You know when people said the Dems need to stop playing the ‘high road’ or being cordial, they meant in how they actually govern and push through legislation,” someone else argued on Reddit. “They didn’t mean to act like edgy 14 year olds on social media. This is so f—ing dumb.”
People are wondering where the “competent adults” went.

There are definitely people who appear to appreciate the memeification of U.S. politics, but a decent number of people are actually tired of it. “America is not a serious country,” one Redditor wrote. “How is THIS the most powerful country on earth? Can you get some competent adults back in office?”
“This is the level of discourse we’re at?” someone else added. “I get it, the other side is doing it too…but trolling should at least be clever in some way.”
MAGA supporters in the comments were outraged by the DNC’s response to Miller’s post.

Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, also talked about the post on Fox News. “This is the same violent political rhetoric that is leading people to shooting up, whether it be the White House Correspondents’ Dinner or President Trump in Butler,” she argued. She also claimed that a “sad liberal woman” wrote the post directed at her husband.
But several commenters argued that this outrage felt hypocritical, especially considering how President Donald Trump talks about people.
“Don’t lecture anyone about tone when you spent years defending the most openly vile, racist, and malicious political figure in modern American politics,” one critic wrote in a comment addressed to MAGA. “Trump made being a disgusting a–hole the standard, and the right treated it like a virtue.”
