Throughout Donald Trump’s first and second terms in office as the president, people noticed how distant First Lady Melania Trump seems to be from him, physically and emotionally. From clips where she seems to rebuff his attempt at holding her hand to seemingly rolling her eyes at him in disgust, Melania’s viral memes are often about what people believe to be her dislike of her husband.
But when Melania made her first appearance for weeks ahead of the August 2026 Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., people noticed something else. According to body language experts per HuffPost, the way Melania and Trump interacted with each other is an indicator of where they stand now as a couple.

For weeks leading up to Melania’s appearance at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, she was not seen with Trump or otherwise. Some speculated that she wanted to keep her distance from her husband, while others theorized that she made the decision to only show her face when absolutely necessary.
When she appeared at an event for her Be Best campaign to accept a donation, she even joked to reporters that she heard they missed her. But there was no explanation for her prolonged absence or why she decided to come back out and stand at Trump’s side. For those who might think there is a connection between Melania’s absences and her marriage, though, it seems like she and Trump want to put up a united front.

Body language experts who spoke with HuffPost said that Melania’s body language with Trump during the Rose Garden event showed a sign of “composed” and “controlled” unity with Trump. In other words, they chose to present themselves as a strong couple, and that’s how they came across to experts, particularly Melania.
“Their interaction is restrained rather than overtly affectionate, but they are presenting themselves very clearly as a pair,” behavioral scientist Abbie Maroño told the outlet. “Trump also gives her the space to own the event: He accompanies her out, but the attention then shifts to Melania rather than him competing for the central position,” Maroño added. “Melania herself comes across as controlled, rather than reluctant about being back in front of the press.”
But all of that might be meant as a deliberate act for Melania and Trump to present themselves as a strong and undivided couple to the world. This is especially pertinent at this time, when there are rumors and speculation about Trump’s working relationship with White House aide Natalie Harp.
Many already suspected that she hates Donald Trump.
Melania’s body language might not scream that she hates Trump, but if her movements and confidence during the Rose Garden event were meant to show that she is calm and not going anywhere, it doesn’t mean things are great with Trump. In fact, if her actions and body language were deliberate, it could mean she was putting on airs in a big way.
On a Reddit post about how much Melania does, or doesn’t, like Trump, one person joked that she is in the marriage for her “anchor baby,” Barron Trump, and the money, and nothing more.
Someone else wrote, “This is well documented, she absolutely hates him. Just look at her body language. I mean can you blame her?”
