Often, when Second Lady Usha Vance speaks up about something, it involves children and their families — but people usually find ways to tie her initiatives back to President Donald Trump. For example, when Usha took to social media to promote her childhood literacy initiatives, many Trump critics joked about his ability to read.
Her most recent initiative has sparked similar Trump-related commentary. On September 14, Usha took to social media to raise awareness about diaper banks during National Diaper Need Awareness Week. She focused on the importance of supporting new parents, but her post came amid persistent rumors about Trump’s alleged diaper usage.
In a video shared on X, Usha thanked those who support diaper banks nationwide. Cue jokes about Trump and his aide Natalie Harp.
Usha explained why diaper banks are so important.

“I’m so honored to partner with the National Diaper Bank Network during National Diaper Need Awareness Week,” Usha said in her video. “Our fourth baby is just a few weeks old, and his birth has reminded me how all new parents need support from their friends, families, and communities during this precious and important time.”
She then went on to talk about diaper banks specifically. “For many families, diaper banks are a critical source of community support,” she explained. “By providing diapers and wipes, diaper banks relieve financial stress, improve babies’ health and comfort, and give new parents peace of mind during the early years.”
In her caption, Usha urged those who are interested in helping families to consider supporting a diaper bank in some capacity. “If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, consider supporting the @diapernetwork or finding a diaper bank in your own community,” she wrote. “Whether you donate diapers, volunteer your time, or spread the word, every act of generosity helps families in need.”
People immediately made it about the Trump diaper rumors.

Some commenters on X joked that the White House definitely needs diapers. “Can you please send some to the White House?” one person joked. “They have a pressing need!”
“Does Natalie Harper know about this?” someone else wrote. “I’m sure Donald goes through a lot of diapers.”
“Does Trump go to the diaper bank, or does he send Natalie?” a third critic questioned.
The fact that Usha chose to focus on this particular initiative right now almost felt like a joke to some of Trump’s critics. “If you assume this is a thinly veiled dig at @POTUS it’ll make you happy for a little while,” a commenter noted.
“SNL could never come up with something as gold as this,” another person added. And someone even questioned why First Lady Melania Trump was not involved in promoting this particular initiative. “Is there a specific reason why (Melania) didn’t take this one on? Hit too close to home?” they joked.
As is often the case, the post also sparked a lot of criticism directed at Usha’s husband.

Some people had good things to say about Usha’s diaper bank awareness effort. One commenter wrote, “I volunteer at a pregnancy center. The number one material good that moms come in for is diapers. They are so costly. Thank you SLOTUS for highlighting the diaper network and pregnancy resource centers.”
But many commenters were more critical of the initiative, not because they see supporting families as unimportant, but because of the Trump administration’s policy decisions that have negatively impacted them.
“It’s ironic to see you promoting initiatives and services that your husband and his boss would see shut down or ended,” a critic argued. “If you asked either of them about this in a soundbyte they would mock it.”
Several commenters told Usha that if she cares about reducing costs for families, perhaps she should go talk to her husband. “Your husband and his boss screw everyone except billionaires and Americans can’t afford diapers or food,” someone else wrote.
“If your husband wasn’t such a failure at his job we wouldn’t have to beg people for free diapers,” another commenter added. “Shame on you!”
They didn’t necessarily blame Usha specifically, but some critics accused her of being an “enabler.” Questioning Usha’s efforts to promote diaper banks, one person wrote, “Wouldn’t your husband consider that charity and shouldn’t those people get off their a–es and work, according to him?”
Of course, people’s affordability concerns came up in the comments as well. “I couldn’t even imagine being a young family right now with the cost of groceries so high,” another commenter said. “And yes, I forgot about formula, diapers and wipes.”
