People have long had questions about Vice President JD Vance’s marriage. And despite being in the public eye, his wife, Usha Vance, is very clearly trying to maintain some semblance of a “normal” life, which perhaps makes her come across as even more mysterious and harder for people to figure out. Some questionable comments JD has made about his wife have also gone viral, and the couple has sparked divorce rumors multiple times, whether it was due to Usha appearing in public without her wedding ring or because of JD’s interactions with Erika Kirk.
Recently, Usha sat down for an interview with NBC News’ Kate Snow and admitted that she and her husband don’t always see eye to eye. Still, she seems to be standing by him, regardless.
Kate asked Usha about the conversations she has with her husband.
And Usha made it clear that she’s not a political adviser of any sort, but she is there when her husband wants to talk about what’s going on because she wants to be “supportive.”
“We sort of work together in a way. I’m not the Vice President. I’m not in his office, but…a lot of what we do is spend time together even if we’re working on separate things,” Usha said. “So, there are conversations all the time. I do really like to understand what’s going on in his world, what he’s really focused on, what concerns he has, because it’s a marriage. I mean, I want to be supportive of him, and if I don’t really know what’s going on, then I can’t do that.”
Given that JD has advisers, he mainly goes to his wife “when something is troubling him” or “when he really wants to talk through something that feels more, kind of, intensely personal or important personally.”
People have been trying to figure out if Usha actually agrees with her husband’s views.
She didn’t share a lot of details about what they agree on or disagree on, but she made it clear that some of their opinions are different. “We have totally different backgrounds, right?” Usha explained. “We have different starting points for thinking about all sorts of questions, but one of the benefits of being in a marriage as opposed to, I’m not a staffer, I’m not involved in this in any professional sense, is that there’s no expectation that we’re going to see eye to eye on everything.”
For people who are trying to figure out what (and how much) JD and Usha have in common, a lot of unanswered questions remain. Usha simply said that she and her husband have “open-minded” conversations about the things they disagree on. Hmm. “The expectation is that we are going to be open-minded and have a conversation, and that I’ll provide meaningful input from, you know, the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed,” she said. “So even if we don’t agree, I think it’s always very productive.”

NBC pointed out that Usha was a Democrat until 2014, so a lot of people have been wondering what changed for her (and how she feels about her husband working for President Donald Trump). Kate asked Usha if she feels comfortable in the environment that she’s currently in, and Usha said that she does.
“I do feel very comfortable in that no one has ever asked me to engage in any kind of litmus test on anything,” she said. “And what I’ve found is that I was myself in 2014. I can be myself today. And I feel very comfortable in that world. I don’t feel like I have to walk around pretending anything of any sort. I didn’t think I had to do that [in 2014], actually.”
She continued, “Sometimes I have thoughts that fit very comfortably into one side or another. Sometimes I have views that are way more idiosyncratic. And it’s a world that I think is actually rather accepting of that, since everyone knows that I really care greatly about JD’s success. That I want him to be able to pursue the ideas that he thinks are really going to help people live better lives, especially people like where he came from.”
Asked if she owns a MAGA cap, Usha simply tried to say she’s not a hat person. People have a hard time believing that, given all of the photos they’ve seen of her wearing different hats.
