Owning a dog comes with a lot of responsibility. If you're not ready for, essentially, a second full-time job, you might want to reconsider welcoming one into your family.
However, if you're ready to tackle the responsibility of a new furry family member in your home, you're going to need to know a few things.
The first thing to know is that you're going to get so much unconditional love back from this pup, but only if you take proper care of him or her.
This is a large catch that, unfortunately, not all dog owners fully comprehend. Even if your intentions are good, there could be crucial measures you're unknowingly skipping when it comes to your dog's well-being and happiness.
That's why it's important to know about proper pet care. These 10 tips from dog groomers will help you better understand your dog's needs, making everyone a happy camper.

1. Get Started Early
Some dogs really don't like to get groomed, and that might be because they weren't handled in that way as puppies. If you touch their paws and bring them to the groomer when they're a puppy, they won't see it as such a big deal as big dogs.
2. Brush Every Few Days
If your dog has long hair, you should brush it every few days to prevent it from getting knotty and uncomfortable. This will also help them get accustomed to getting brushed.
3. Check Nooks And Crannies
Groomers suggest you check areas like the feet, ears, and armpits (legpits?) regularly for anything that could get stuck there and cause great discomfort.
4. Stay Cool
Our pets pick up on stress and anxiety, so stay calm while grooming or bringing your dog to the groomer. A happy owner means a happy pet.
5. Bathe Regularly
Brushing and clipping toenails alone aren't enough. Dogs don't clean themselves like cats, so whether you bring your pup to the groomer or bathe them yourself, get it done!
6. Know Your Breed
Not all dogs are created equal, so acquaint yourself with the needs of your particular dog. Longer, straighter-haired dogs will need different attention than a curly-haired dog with shorter hair.
7. Careful Of The Quick
Groomers warn, when clipping nails, make sure you don't cut too far down. You could snip the quick, which is where the nerve endings begin. It's incredibly painful to your animal, and will cause bleeding. Keep styptic powder or cornstarch handy in case of a mistake to stop any bleeding.
8. Never Use Human Toothpaste
Groomers know it can be toxic to dogs! There is toothpaste made specifically for dogs, as well as toothbrushes. Your canine needs regular oral care to prevent gum diseases and tooth infections.
9. Don't Get Skimpy
If you're not going to invest in all the necessary tools and materials like clippers, different kinds of brushes, and special shampoos to care for your dog on your own, make sure to keep regular appointments with your favorite groomer.
10. Make Grooming Fun
Positive reinforcement during and after grooming can help your dog enjoy the process more. Give your pooch a small treat or their favorite toy after you groom them. If you're doing it yourself, you can turn it into an opportunity to bond!
Whether you're going to the groomer or doing it yourself, it's always good to make the process easier on everyone involved. What other pup-care ideas did we miss? Let us know in the comments!
