One decision left two families destroyed. In 1978, two little girls were born at Hardee Memorial Hospital in Wachula, FL.
Kimberly Mays was believed to be Robert and Barbara Mays' little girl. Arlena Twiggs was believed to be Ernest and Regina Twiggs' daughter.
Arlena was born with a heart defect that she would struggle with until the day she died. When Arlena was 9 years old, doctors conducted a blood test related to her heart condition. That's when they discovered Arlena's blood did not match her parents'. More tests revealed that Arlena was not the Twiggs' biological daughter.
Arlena passed away soon after. Regina was set on determining what happened to her daughter. She discovered that Arlena and Kimberly Mays were the only two caucasian girls born at the hospital during that time.
Eventually a nurse admitted she was paid to switch the babies. Regina believed that Robert and Barbara Mays, a wealthy couple, paid to have the babies switched because they did not want a child with a heart defect.
Robert denied the allegations and the two families underwent an explosive legal battle spanning years. Both families sued the hospital for millions of dollars.
Regina fought for custody of Kimberly, whom she renamed Arlena. Later, Kimberly divorced the Twiggs because her new siblings resented her. Soon after, she ran away. Caught between two families and a truth that seemed elusive, the experience haunted Kimberly, who never spoke with the Twiggs again.
